The THDL Tibetan Collaborative Dictionaries
THDL is building a rich historical array of integrated Tibetan dictionaries linked to extended descriptive encyclopedia entries. The basic infrastructure is in place, and we are now working on the interface and searching enhancements. At present there are over 100,000 basic entries courtesy of Rangjung Yeshe's generous permission to incorporate their dictionary. We have other detailed lexical resources which we are gradually migrating into the dictionary.
The dictionaries of Rangjung Yeshe, Jim Valby and Jeffrey Hopkins can also be accessed using the translation tool, which parses Tibetan passages into component words and phrases for which it then provides multiple dictionary definitions. The Rangjung Yeshe dictionary is particularly good for terminology from the Dzokchen (rdzogs chen) and Mahāmudrā (phyag rgya chen po) traditions. Jim Valby's dictionary includes the content of Sarat Chandra Das's dictionary (minus the Sanskrit), much of Jäschke's dictionary, and glossaries from several translators, although the source of a given definition is not identified. Jeffrey Hopkins's dictionary is particularly strong in terminology used in Tibetan monastic textbook literature (yig cha); most of the more than 18,440 entries include a literal etymology, and many also have Sanskrit equivalents, example sentences, and translation equivalents from other sources.
