Title: Thangka Eight - Metaphors of Body Structure
Caption: Thangka Eight, "Metaphors of Body Structure", is a painting broken up into two parts. For the first ¾ of the painting, an extended metaphor is used to compare a person sitting in a meditative position with arms rested at the sides to the universal emperor’s (Cakravarin's) palace with all its different relations.
The second half of the painting illustrates normal sizes for a variety of bodily components for both the male and female gender. These divisions of the body's matter are measured in terms of "cupped handfuls" or "single handfuls".
Compared to the other thangkas in this set of medical paintings, "Metaphors of Body Structure" has extreme variation between sets in both the choice of colours used and the style of depiction. Comparing the photographs in this presentation to other collections of these thangkas is extremely interesting as the diversity is great between paintings.
