Title:
Detail of Medical Instruments (VII) - Thangka Thirty-Six

Caption:
This photograph depicts a variety of stylets of different lengths with different shaped-heads. Stylets are generally used to puncture areas of the body in order to release fluids or vapours. The top instrument of the left has a tip shaped like a frog's head and is used for tumours in areas such as the lungs, heart and kidneys. The next instrument down is a stylet used generally on the eyes. The next three stylets down are for use on cataracts in the eyes. The final stylet in this column is used on the limbs.

On the right column, the top instrument is a stylet used after cauterization to remove pus and fluid. The final three tools in this panel are "adzes" (spoons) of various lengths and sizes made of high quality materials and "used for scraping injured head bones" (Dorje & Meyer, 83).
