Title: Detail of Medical Instruments (IV) - Thangka Thirty-Six
Caption: This panel is located three panels down from the top of the overall thangka and depicts a variety of lancets. The instrument at the top of the highlighted area is an axe-shaped lancet used for performing bloodletting on vessels above the bones. The second tool is shaped like a moon on the second day of its cycle. The third tool down is a straight-edged basic lancet.
The fourth tool is characterized differently by different sources. According to Dorje & Meyer, it is a “‘Water Knife’ or spatula for applying a compress to swellings" (Dorje & Meyer, 239). According to Jingfeng it is a "round tip knife for cutting hair" (Jingfeng, 253).
The final instrument in the highlighted portion of this panel has a sickle-shaped sharp edge which is used on the tongue to remove swelling.
