TK 36 - Detail (13).jpg [14/20]
Title: Detail of Medical Instruments (XIII) - Thangka Thirty-Six
Caption: The two central instruments shown in this photograph are metal inhalers used for fumigation of the nose (left) and mouth (right.) The left instrument is a smoke-inhaler which has a hollow stem and an opening at the top shaped like a person's mouth (this is depicted in the painting by the lips.)
The instrument on the right is used to blow medicines into a patient's throat. And, "with a small tip this instrument is also used for agni-karma (cauterization)" (Bhagwan Dash, 14) - it is not clear which tip is being referred to, but cauterization with this tool is performed on the uvula. In other versions of this thangka, these inhalers are often more ornate.
