TK 36 - Detail (12).jpg [13/20]
Title: Detail of Medical Instruments (XII) - Thangka Thirty-Six
Caption: The top instrument in this panel is a catheter, "which is like the middle part of a wheat-stalk" (Bhagwan Dash, 14) and is used for removing urine from an obstructed bladder. Jingfeng curiously describes the instrument as a "magical stick for a catheterization".
The second instrument is also used for cauterization, but in this case its purpose is to cauterize teeth which have either decayed or become infested with worms. This task is performed by the end of this tool, which is curved upward.
