Projects

Currently under development within the Art Collections:

Speaking Tibetan Art: the Tibetan Art unit within Tibetan Language Learning Resources, materials for the study of Tibetan art using Tibetan language.

Tibetan Murals: THDL has gathered extensive photographic and videographic documentation of selected murals in Meru Nyingba Monastery, the Lukhang, the Jokhang, and several other important sites in Lhasa. We also have video interviews of Tibetans scholars discussing some of these murals.

Thangka Painting: A multiple part series of videos documents the process of a thangka being commissioned, painted, framed in brocade, and presented to the patron. Additional videos include explication of painting techniques and commentary on Tibetan art historical literature.

The Derge Deity Woodblock Prints: The Derge (sde dge) Art Prints Project is digitizing and annotating the black and white prints from the Derge Publishing House's traditional woodblocks that depict various deity and lineage sets. The annotations have been done by the Russian thangka painter and scholar, Alexander Kocharov.

Rock Art: A series of images documents some of the rock art in the Lhasa area and in regions of Western Tibet.
