Collection: Body language, facial expressions and sign language in Tibet (12 titles)Series: Body language in Tibet (12 titles) collection details | view all titles Body language in Tibet explores the ways in which Tibetans use body language to communicate. At present, our examples are drawn from Lhasa, but we hope eventually to get others involved so that variations in body language across Tibetan cultural regions can be studied. These resources are useful for the language learner trying to learn suitable physical expressions and gestures, but could also be helpful for non-language learners to interpret physical expressions while interacting with Tibetans. It may also be of general cultural interest.

They were gifted to Professor Alan Macfarlane by Professor Haimendorf shortly before his death, and were digitised between December 2000 and August 2002 by Mark Turin and Sarah Harrison. The footage was then catalogued by members of the Digital Himalaya Project. Series: Apa Tani films (11 titles) collection details | view all titles Presented below are edited film clips from Professor Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf field trip to the Apa Tani Valley in Arunachal Pradesh, north eastern India. From 1912 to 1944, no exploratory expedition had entered the Subansiri region of the North-East Frontier regions, until Haimendorf, as Special Officer in Subansiri, visited a number of the villages in 1944 and 1945. Haimendorf focussed his ethnographic attentions on the Apa Tani people, who are documented in the footage below. His excellent book The Apa Tanis and their Neighbours (Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1962) describes his field trip in detail and describes the culture of the peoples of this little-known area.

Do 3 things. Do on Sunday the 14th. Wear hats and chubas. Site kun bde gling with monk.
Thub bstan saw in 1963 (?) blo bzang rdo rje, a Tibetan comic famous for his drunken acts.
Thub bstan and mig dmar have worked apart for 40 years, but from 1980 worked together. Were in same office, but before not together. Thub bstan had a partner before. Now mig dmar has another partner sometimes, sicne thub bstan is semi-retired. Three other people who work with these guys at times.
office: lha sa grong ?khyer zlos gar tshogs pa ? now is named lha sa grong khyer mi rigs sgyu rtsal tshogs pa. is located neare dar rgyas sgron khang. more than 100 workers in this office. never perform privately, only for office. can only perform in nang ma if is for office.
the drunken skit is from china.
never watched foreign actors because of English. have watched some Chinese. the laughter comes from Chinese.
lha mo
rig gnas
those all have lo rgyus mkhas pa.
khrab pa ? that is a very short time.
blo bzang rdo rje - very funny guy. all the students would love it. was professor in Beijing mi rigs slob grwa chen po. died in 1987 (?) in lhasa.
must constantly compose new acts each year, less it becomes stale. no wraiters in the office. so others like phun tshogs bkra shis (, bsod nam tshe ring (bod ljong sgyu rtsal zhib ?jug khang), nyi ma don grub (gtam brjod tshogs pa) write them. then the two sob ta adjust, and then sit down with writer and do it from memory.
how often to do it? if go to village, then perform 2-3 timese in a day. they no longer perform in nang ma not even once. the lesser comics can go in nang ma, but they are not allowed. primarily sent to villages.
for comics, need excellent bod yig, less they can?t even read the scripts. must speak lhasa. acting skills, voice. so now difficulty, mos diffuclt is bod yig. cha rkyen: bod skad yag po ? bzang po, tsik po, gtso bo nyams smyong, lag len yag po dgos. spyi tshogs gnas tshul gang ga shes dgos. klad pa sprug po ? must now when to respond, interact precisely. must also like the work, otherwise it won?t come.
the younger comics don?t like to memorize all the Tibetan. but when get older, brain is worse and very hard to memorize words/script ? morning you get, but by afternoon forget.
now they are telling govt that for the young guys with tehse qualifications, need to gather them togethera nd train them.
in shigatse and lha kha are some good comics a b it younger, but also old themselves.
shigatse: don grub and srid dar (sidar ? one recovered from srid diseases, so srid (?) thar). two comics. shigatse rig rtsal tshogs pa.
lho kha: comics stobs rgyal (very old), bskal bzang yon tan (young). they work together. without stobs rgyal, bskal bzang yon tan will just dance.

Collection: Places and Regions in Tibet (27 titles)This collection presents introductions to cultural regions and places in Tibet as given by scholars or residents, and ranging from broadly defined areas to a single neighborhood. It also includes all variety of lectures that concern the contemporary situation or history of a given place in Tibet. Series: Ngari (mnga' ris) (2 titles) collection details | view all titles We are gathering formal lectures that are intended to provide introductions to Tibetan regions and places. Our plan is to include academics who are anthropologists and historians familiar with the region/place in question, but also include inhabitants from all walks of life talking about places they live in. Ultimately we plan to systematically cover the principal ethno-linguistic regions of Tibet, subregions, and then specific places within those subregions; to a lesser extent, we plan to also deal with contemporary political administrative units. In this way, it will allow Tibetans to present their own places from their own point of views.
In addition to formal interviews/lectures, we are also documenting cultural life and events in these places. However, this collection is limited to formal lectures, interviews, or guided tours of places, i.e. materials in which the place itself is the formal subject of speech. Simple place-based searches can easily produce titles in other series that were shot in any given place discussed in the present collection.
Thus at present, we have ?academic lectures?, ?residents interviews?, and ?guided tours? as subseries. It seems likely we will also want to organize these things instead by subregions, etc. Or the ?Monasteries of Lhasa?, with same items also found within the respective neighborhoods of Lhasa in which they are located. And so forth. So we have to keep an eye on this. Here again we see the value of GDMS for this.
Make Collections for every region level down to point of village potentially.
